Outlook Express 6 Options

Changing Your View

There are several default View settings used by Outlook Express that you might want to change.
1.Select View / Layout
2.From here you can select what options you want to see each time you start Outlook Express
3.You can also change the Preview Pane. Due to some of the newer viruses being spread via e-mail, I would recommend turning this off.

Adding a Signature

You can have Outlook automatically add a signature to all new e-mails as well as replies or forwards.
1.Go to Tools / Options
2.Click on the Signatures tab
3.Click on the New button
4.Rename the title of the signature
3.Check Add signatures to all outgoing messages
4.Edit the text you want to appear as the signature

Adding File Attachment Security

One of the big problems with previous versions of Outlook Express was that there wasn't much in the way of restricting e-mail attachments.
Since most viruses are being spread through these attachments, the capability is now available to select which ones you want to accept.
1.Go to Tools / Options / Security
2.Check Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus
3.If you try an open one of these attachments, you will see a message
OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail: filename

Initially this can restrict more file types than you would like.
To be able to turn off the restriction for selected file extensions:

1.Start the Windows Explorer
2.Go to Tools / Folder Options
3.Click on the File Types tab
4.Scroll to the extension you want to change
5.Click on the Advanced button
6.Uncheck Confirm open after download
7.This will immediately allow you to open attachments with that particular extension. The example below shows the setting to open ZIP files.

Changing the Location of Your E-Mail Files

You can easily change the location Outlook Express will stored your e-mail files.
1.Go to Tools / Options
 2.Click on the Maintenance tab
3.Click on the Store Folder button
4.This will show the current directory that is being used
6.Click on the  Change button
7.Browse to the new drive and directory
8.Changes will be made after you exit and restart Outlook Express
9.Files will automatically be copied the next time you start Outlook Express

Configuring for Multiple User Accounts

You can configure Outlook Express for multiple user accounts orIdentities
1.Go to File / Identities / Add New Identity
2.Click on the New button
3.Enter in the Name for this Identity
4.Click on the OK button
5.When prompted to switch, click on the Yes button
6.Since this is a new account, you will then be prompted to either Create or Import Account Information. If you only use Outlook Express, choose Create an New Internet Mail Account
7.Follow the prompts and enter in the:
  • Display Name
  • E-Mail Address
  • POP3 and SMTP Server Names
  • Account Name and Password
8.Once the new Identity is created, you can switch by simply selecting File / Switching Identity

Adding Size to the Column Display

It can often be helpful to see the size of the attachments you are being sent.

Linux File and Directory Permissions

file & directory protection is a essential of any OS and Linux OS is no exception for it! These authorizations allow you to choose exactly who can access your files & directory, providing an overall improved system security. There was one of the major flaws in the older Windows operating-system where, by standard, all users can see each other people's information (Windows 95, 98, Me). For overcoming it, editions of the Windows based computer system such as NT, 2000, XP and 2003 lot more security features added. They fully support file & directory permissions, just as Linux system has since the beginning. Together, we'll now assess a directory listing from our Lab Linux system hosting server, to help us understand the information provided. a simple 'ls' command will give you the file and directory listing within a given directory, including the option  '-l' will display number of new areas that we are going to discuss here:
