Fix BOOTMGR is Missing Error in Window 7 or Vista

BOOTMGR Error Message

There are few ways that the "BOOTMGR is missing" error may show up on your computer, with the first error I have listed being the most common:
  • "BOOTMGR is missing
Press Ctrl Alt Del to restart"
  • "BOOTMGR is missing
    Press any key to restart"
  • "Couldn't find BOOTMGR"
The "BOOTMGR is missing" error displays shortly after the computer is turned on, immediately after the Power On Self Test (POST) is complete. Windows 7 or Windows Vista has only initially started to load when the BOOTMGR error message appears.

Causes of BOOTMGR Errors

There are a number of possible causes for BOOTMGR errors, including the most common "BOOTMGR is missing" error message.
The most common reasons for BOOTMGR errors include corrupt and misconfigured files, hard drive and operating system upgrade issues, corrupt hard drive sectors, an outdated BIOS, and damaged or loose IDE cables.
Another reason you might see BOOTMGR errors is if your PC is trying to boot from a hard drive or flash drive that is not properly configured to be booted from. In other words, it's trying to boot from a non-bootable source. This also would apply to media on an optical drive or floppy drive that you're trying to boot from.

Windows7-Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure

Automatically Restart on System Failure Option in Windows 7
Windows 7 is configured by default to restart immediately after a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) or other major system problem. This reboot usually happens too fast to see the error message on screen.
Follow these simple steps to disable the automatic restart feature for system failures in Windows 7.

Important: Unable to boot completely into Windows 7 due to the BSOD? See Tip #2 at the bottom of this page for help.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Disabling the Automatic Restart option in Windows 7 usually takes less than 10 minutes

Disable Error Reporting in Windows 7

Error reporting is enabled by default in Windows 7. You might want to disable error reporting for privacy concerns, if you're not connected to the Internet all the time, or maybe just to stop being annoyed by the alerts.
Error reporting works by prompting you after a critical error in the Windows 7 operating system or in other programs and then notifying Microsoft about it.

This way, Microsoft can gather technical information about serious errors from millions of PCs which helps them develop patches and service packs.
See the easy steps below if you'd like to disable error reporting in Windows 7:
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Disabling error reporting in Windows 7 usually takes less than 5 minutes

How SNMP Works

In this section we see.

· SNMP Architecture
· SNMP Manager/Agent Communication
· SNMP Management Systems and Agents
· SNMP Messages

Use Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) management software to monitor any network device configured with SNMP agent software. The SNMP agent, which is an optional component of Windows Server 2003, interacts with third-party SNMP management software to enable the flow of network status information between monitored devices and applications and the management systems that monitor them.

You can use SNMP in environments that include large networks with hundreds or thousands of nodes that would otherwise be difficult and costly to monitor. SNMP allows monitoring of network devices such as servers, workstations, printers, routers, bridges, and hubs, as well as services such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) or Windows Internet Name Service (WINS).

The following sections describe the architecture, components, and processes used by SNMP.

What Is SNMP...?

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a popular protocol for network management. It is used for collecting information from, and configuring, network devices, such as servers, printers, hubs, switches, and routers on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. Microsoft Windows Server 2003 provides SNMP agent software that works with third-party SNMP management software to monitor the status of managed devices and applications.

Automating Network Management
Large networks with hundreds or thousands of nodes are difficult to manage without a large staff to monitor every computer. SNMP, which is widely used in local area networks (LANs), lets you monitor network nodes from a management host. You can monitor network devices such as servers, workstations, printers, routers, bridges, and hubs, as well as services such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) or Windows Internet Name Service (WINS).

Network Monitoring Technologies

In Microsoft Windows Server 2003 network monitoring technologies help network administrators track and manage the functions of devices on the network.

Network Monitoring Components

There are two network monitoring technologies that help network administrators track and manage the functions of devices on the network:
  • Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)

SNMP is a network management protocol that can monitor and alert administrators regarding the condition of hardware components such as workstations and servers.
  • Microsoft Computer Browser Service

The Computer Browser Service in computers running Windows enables network administrators and users to browse and gain access to the resources of the network. The browser service provides a convenient listing of devices such as workstations and printers, and allows network users access to them with the proper authentication.

DNS registration changes for Windows Server 2003 based DHCP Servers

When the DHCP Server role is installed on a domain controller, the DHCP Server inherits the security permissions of the domain controller. To prevent possible misuse of the domain controller’s elevated permissions, DHCP Servers that are installed on Windows Server 2003 do not register DNS records on behalf of the clients that are associated with the DHCP Server unless the DHCP Server is explicitly configured with DNS credentials. This behavior prevents a potential escalation of privilege to clients of the DHCP Server.

Configuring DNS credentials on a DHCP Server that is running Windows Server 2003

Follow these steps to configure the DNS credentials of a DHCP Server that is installed on a domain controller running the Windows Server 2003 operating system:
  1. Start the DHCP management console. Click Start, then click Run and type dhcpmgmt.msc.
  2. In the DHCP navigation pane, expand the server node and right-click IPv4, and then click Properties.
  3. In the resulting dialog box, click the Advanced tab, and then click Credentials.
  4. In the DNS dynamic update credentials dialog box, enter the DNS credentials (User name, Domain, and Password) for the account that is used by the DHCP Server for DNS registrations.

Windows XP Common Issues > Remove icon border shadows on the desktop

Desktop icon label problem

Using XP Pro, I did something when using a CD label making programme that
accidentally made the desktop icons have a blue rectangular label behind the
normal white lettering for the icon. This is only on the log in the wife
uses, my log in is "normal", white letters under the icons, no "label".

I've tried to change all sorts of things to get rid of it, but can only get
the label to change colour.Tried ticks in and out of boxes in properties of
system/appearance etc.

I notice if I go into the icon properties, choose an alternative, and
browse, I'm taken to

Here I see that folders DRVSTORE and DLLCACHE are in blue font, but the
remainder of folders are in black?
Is this the case for anyone else, or is this where my problem is?

Set Windows as Default OS when Dual Booting Ubuntu

Set Windows as Default OS in OS choice menu when Dual Booting Ubuntu & Windows

When you install a dual-boot of Ubuntu, one of the frustrating things that you’ll immediately notice is that Ubuntu is now set as the default operating system in the Grub loader. There’s an easy way to switch back to using Windows as the default.
To make this change, you’ll first have to boot into Ubuntu, and then run the following command:
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Find this section of the file:
## default num
# Set the default entry to the entry number NUM. Numbering starts from 0, and
# the entry number 0 is the default if the command is not used.
# You can specify ’saved’ instead of a number. In this case, the default entry
# is the entry saved with the command ’savedefault’.
# WARNING: If you are using dmraid do not change this entry to ’saved’ or your
# array will desync and will not let you boot your system.
default 0
The important line is the last one. You will need to change that number 0 to match the Windows boot section. Typically it’s always going to be 4 on a default dual-boot configuration. Change this value to 4, and then save and reboot your machine. You should go into Windows instead of Ubuntu automatically.
Note: The blocks at the bottom of the file match the items in the menu. You can change this value to match whichever item you want as default, just remember that numbering starts at 0.

Installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Ubuntu 10.04, also known as the Lucid Lynx, arrived on April 29th, 2010 and is the twelfth release of the Ubuntu OS. We've created the following tutorial to teach Linux newcomers how to install the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS operating system on their personal
computer. Therefore, it is addressed to people who have just heard about Ubuntu, those who have never installed Ubuntu before and want to test it, but don't know how.

The tutorial will make things very simple for you, but if you get stuck somewhere in the middle of the installation and you need help, do not hesitate to use our commenting system at the end of the article!

You will need the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop ISO image that corresponds to your hardware architecture (i386 or amd64), and that can be downloaded from here. When the download is over, burn the ISO image with your favorite CD/DVD burning application (Nero, CDBurnerXP, Roxio) on a blank CD at 8x speed.

Reinsert or leave the CD in your CD/DVD-ROM device and reboot the computer in order to boot from the CD. Hit the F8, F11 or F12 key (depending on your BIOS) to select the CD/DVD-ROM as the boot device.

Installing Ubuntu with Windows Dual-Boot

This page describes how to set up your computer in order to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows.
Back Up Your Data
Although this may seem obvious, it is important to backup your data files to an external backup medium before attempting a dual-boot install (or any other hard drive manipulation), in case your hard drive becomes corrupted during the process. External hard drives, USB flash drives, and multiple DVDs or CDs are useful as external backup media.
Have a Windows recovery CD/DVD available
Many computer manufacturers that pre-install Windows provide a Windows recovery/re-installation CD or DVD with the computer. However, many companies no longer ship a physical disk but instead create a hidden partition on the hard drive in which the recovery-disk information is stored. A utility is then usually provided which allows the user to burn a recovery/re-installation CD or DVD from it. If you are buying a new computer and intent on dual-booting, make sure you have (or can make) a physical Windows recovery/re-installation CD or DVD. If neither a CD/DVD nor a recovery partition/burning utility is provided by your computer manufacturer, you may need to telephone your vendor and ask for a CD or DVD (to which you are normally entitled under the Windows EULA).
It is very important to have such a physical recovery/re-installation CD/DVD prior to changing your hard drive, in case your hard drive becomes corrupted in the process (and the recovery partition thereby becomes unavailable for use).
Once you have created a physical backup disk from a restore-image partition on the hard-drive, the restore-image partition can either be removed or left in place. Ubuntu can be installed with it intact without problems.

Windows replaces copied item by the next item you copy which means you can just have one item in your clipboard. Now if you just want to increase that count and not a complex, xNeat is a great application. This application increases the count I have tried to any number you want and all you need to is to use a different hotkey when you want to paste.

Here is how it looks when you try pasting. It pops up the list of clipboard items and you can select any of them to paste it.

Overall this is an excellent app, simple and does its job. You can download it from here.

Windows Live Movie Maker-trim multiple parts of same video

When using Windows Live Movie maker to create videos at home, one of the biggest problem is to produce a final video which has only parts of the original video. This is specially required when you want your final video to only showcase best moments of a long video.
Windows Live Movie Maker does have split feature which you can use to split videos and then remove what is not required but below is a much easier way to achieve it. We will use two things :
  • Trim Tool : This tool allows you cut a particular section of a movie.
  • And Windows Live Movie maker has no restriction on how many times you can add a video. So if you have 10 moments to be captured, add the video ten times.
How to trim :
  • Select the first video and go to Video Tools which will be highlighted as soon as you select the video.
  • Select Trim Tool and you will see horizontal bar displayed right under the video preview
  • Now drag the bars from left and right to the best video moment and click on Save Trim.
  • You can also use Start and End Point Time if you want to be more accurate.

Keep an eye on Shared Windows Folders with NetShareMonitor

If you have two or more computers connected on to the same network, you can share files and folders on your computer such that others may access them as if they were on their own local file system. You may also set permissions depending on whether you others to simply view your files or even modify them.

This support page on Microsoft has more details on file sharing in Windows.

Once you have enabled sharing in Windows, you may also monitor connections to know which other computers are accessing files on your computer and what files /folders are they currently accessing.

The easiest way to monitor this activity is through the Computer Management program that you may quickly access by typing compmgmt.msc in the Windows Run box. Once there, go to System Tools –> Shared Folders –> Sessions to view a list of all users who are connected over the network to your computer and what files are they accessing.

Alternatively, if you need something more simple, here’s a tiny utility called NetShare Monitor that does exactly the same thing but in a less complicated manner.

NetShare Monitor displays a list of users who are currently accessing your files and folders and also keeps a detailed log of all files that they may have accessed in the session. The audio alerts and the flashing icon in the system tray aren’t very pleasing but luckily, you can easily turn them off from the setting box.

Download : NetShare Monitor <Download link>

Share same folder under multiple names and different permission in Windows

In a typical office environment when you need to share a folder with your colleges, giving right permission is very important. If you are just sharing your photographs or a normal document you can quickly share with read permission to everybody or a particular group its easy but consider this scenario :
Situation : You have two group of people with which you need to share files. First group is only concerned with reading the documents but the second group needs to update the documents ( collaboration ) also.
Simple Solution : So One typical way of doing this is to create two folders with same document set and share it with both groups with different permission.
Problem : Since the update has to be also reflected to Group 1 also, it is your duty to keep both the folders in sync. Now imagine if you have multiple folders like this. Your problem just increased that number of times.

An easy solution that comes with Windows :

Windows 7 allows you to create multiple shared name of the same folder with added beauty of specifying which group can access and with what permission. So
  • If you have a Folder say Project
  • You can create two ( or even more ) shared view. Here I have created two Project Read and Project Update
  • Add Group 1 to Project Read who just want to read
  • And Group 2 to Project Update who can update the files.

Under Sharing you can also restrict how many users can access the folder simultaneously, make sure the files are available offline to shared users.

Difference between DNS stub zone and secondary zone

What is a DNS STUB zone?

A stub zone is a copy of a zone that contains only those resource records
necessary to identify the authoritative Domain Name System (DNS) servers for
that zone. A stub zone is used to resolve names between separate DNS namespaces.
This type of resolution may be necessary when a corporate merger requires that
the DNS servers for two separate DNS namespaces resolve names for clients in
both namespaces.
The master servers for a stub zone are one or more DNS servers authoritative for
the child zone, usually the DNS server hosting the primary zone for the
delegated domain name.

What does a DNS stub zone consists of?

A stub zone consists of:
The start of authority   (SOA) resource record, name server (NS) resource
records, and the glue A   resource records for the delegated zone.

VMware server installation

How to setup a testing network using VMware server-VMware server installation

In old days you had to setup a bunch of computers and a server to emulate a network environment, now you can do the same thing with just a couple of computers using VMware . In this post I will show you how to setup VMware server to host windows server 2003 which is going to act as our domain controller server, and probably a virtual workstation in our testing network.
If you don’t own a copy of windows server 2003 and are too broke to buy one, remember there are many ways to get it online for free.
Starting the network process setup is very simple, you just need to download and install the VMware server which we are going to use to setup our windows 2003 domain controller and a virtual PC. You can install the VMware server on any windows machine, including windows XP home and PRO edition, is not recommended and supported by VMware, but for our testing purposes it should be fine.
Also you need to keep in mind that VMware uses the physical memory and processor on your host machine to run, so is recommended that you have enough memory on your physical machine before installing any VMware player or server. Your processor also needs to be able to handle the load. I think a 1 GB of memory on windows XP should be fine, you should get at least 2 GB for Windows Vista.
VMware server is free, you only need to register to get to the download link, if you haven’t registered you can do so here register. After you have registered, you should get the serial numbers for windows and Linux:
Copy and paste those two serial numbers on notepad and save it for later use. after you do that, download VMware server by clicking on the first download link “VMware Server for Windows Operating Systems”:

Integrate JDownloader to Google Chrome [Extension]

JDownloader  is a popular freeware tool for downloading from file hosting services like Rapidshare, MegaUpload etc and the tool is written in Java. When using JDownloader, you need to copy download links and then paste it in the application to download. JDownloader Integration for Google Chrome is a simple and lightweight extension which provides a nice integration between Chrome and JDownloader. The extension allows users to send links from webpages directly to JDownloader without having to copy them from the webpages.
